Stargirl the Movie

Jerry Spinelli's Book to be Made into a Movie in 2008

Feb 27, 2008
Following acclaimed success of Starigrl and Love, Stargirl, Nickelodean pictures has now picked up the rights to create a Stargirl movie.

After scoring success with his 2000 young adult fiction book Stargirl, and its sequel in 2007, Love, Stargirl, it seems only fitting that Jerry Spinelli’s loveable characters be transported from page to screen. Announced in early 2008, the movie version of Stargirl has both teens and young adults alike clamoring anxiously for any news about this new film.

The Stargirl movie will be produced by Nickelodean films and, according to the Internet Movie Database, is slated to be released in 2008. The movie version is being adapted for the screen by Elizabeth Allen and Nick Pustay (Eyeball Eddie and Camille).

Why A Movie?:

Why not! Spinelli has had such great success, including Newbery nominations, Publishers’ Weekly Best Book of 2000 and was on the New York Times Bestseller list. Not only that, but Stargirl is now being taught in many middle school classrooms, and many have even joined up to start Stargirl Societies. Stargirl Socieites have been set up to promote self-confidence and individuality in the young women of today, and have increased the books popularity even more. According to Spinelli’s official website, Stargirl is now being read in forty different languages!

Casting:

No casting has yet been announced, and one certainly cannot presume to guess at who would be best to play such diverse characters, however here are some details that producers and casting directors will keep in mind:

Stargirl Carraway – She is not a Hollywood beauty – the whole premise of the book will simply not work if Stargirl looks glamorous or put together. Hopefully casting directors will go for a fresh face, or one who can be plain in appearance but completely captivating in personality.

Leo Borlock – At the end of the day, Leo is simply a nervous, uncomfortable and self-conscious freshman trying to survive his first year of high school. An actor who exudes confidence would really destroy the way in which Stargirl’s confidence offsets Leo.

Synopsis:

Leo Borlock is the new kid in town, and he figures he’ll the one everyone is looking at the first day of school at Mica Area High School – boy was he wrong! “Stargirl” Carraway shows up to school, looking like she walked right out of a storybook, wearing kimonos, flapper dresses and buckskin, just to name a few.

She is obsessed with doing anonymous good deeds for people, and loves serenading her schoolmates on their birthday in the cafeteria by strumming on her ukulele. And now she has set her sites on Leo. It’s obvious she has a crush on him, but he just wishes she’d stop drawing attention to him – or does he?

As the novel continues and follows Stargirl and her rat Cinnamon through their adventures, and eventually Leo as he gets dragged along, many readers begin to wish there was a Stargirl at their school, just to make life a little brighter and a little more interesting. Things in Stargirl and Leo’s strange relationship eventually come to a head, however, and of them have some very important decisions to make.

When I read stargirl I was shoked because all my friends had told me for years to read the book because stargirl was alot like me. I never actually thought they were serius but I related so much to her charecter in more then one way, I watch the sunrise at least once a week, I am learning ukelele, I have always loved pionee dresses but my mother doesn't let me leave the house very often wearing mine, I have a rat and I meditate and I give all my friends close or not at all, birthday cards.I was so shoked when it was like reading about myself in alot of ways, I was kind of creeped out. I have never though I was ever that pretty, although my mother says I am,but, I don't see it. I would be so sad to see a hollywood actris in her role, cuz I think i would reck her whole image. I think u guys should get someone undiscovered to play the role. but I also would love to audition I think i have as much a chance as everybody else that auditions, and it is my new proclaimed dream to play stargirl now. I absolutely love the 2nd book. by Soulwind wells

I love the book. The whole time while i read it i kind of had this picture in my head, that later when i saw a harry potter movie, the girl imedietly fitted the whole image. That person is Evanna Lynch who played Luna Lovegood, i think she fits into the chrtacter perfectly and will be very good wit the role!

I love the book Star Girl! I think is an inspirational book for both kids and teens. I am getting ready to read Love, Stargirl and I can't wait to see what happens! I want to know what happens! I want to know if Leo and Stargirl will get back together or at that will they ever see each other again? I am totally stoked about the movie Stargirl thats coming out. As soon as I got done reading the book the first thing I did was try to find out if you had a movie to the book. I even had my mother read it because I told her it was to good to explain... she loved it! I also love all the rest of Jerry Spenelli's books like Maniac Magee. I just finished reading it and I LOVED it! It was so amazing. I would love to see a movie to the sequal of stargirl, Love, Stargirl. I think... matter of fact I know that Jerry Spenelli is my FAVORITE author. I am also currently reading his book Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing while waiting for my Love, Stargirl book to arrive that I ordered. Jerry Spenelli just puts alot of voice into his writing and it is so organized and he's never off topic. He also leaves his readers with suspense like at the end of stargirl it was talking about how Stargirl had left and how he found her secret office. The last two sentences say "Last month, one day before my birthday, I received a gift-wrapped package in the mail. It was a porcupine necktie." If you ask me I wanted to know what was going to happen next! Jerry Spenelli I can't wait to read another one of your books... because their all amazing. (P.S. I hope you come out with a sequal and a movie to Maniac Magee. If you do I would greatly appreciate it.)

I love this book!
I just hope they don't destroy it with the movie. There are too many examples of that.

For the Stargirl movie, I think Jonathan Taylor Thomas would make a great Leo, because he is a wonderful actor and gets right into the character of each person he has been in movies and tv shows. He also isn't working on any movies or anything like that as far as I am aware of. If you can use him, please do, because that would be wonderful, and since many people like him it could easily add publicity even if it already will most likely have a lot of it already, being that Stargirl is such a great book.

Thanks!

I'm not sure about who should play Stargirl, although I certainly hope they cast a good choice. If not it will ruin Stargirl forever....ecspecially if they persist on creating a sequel. The fact that it's being done by Nickelodian is not exactly reasurring.

I disagree with the people who say "Luna Lovegood" is like Stargirl. While the actress may be able to pull her off, she would have to dye her hair, drop the british accent, and not speak in a breathy tone. Although I doubt she would be cast at all, because she lives in Britan and it would be expensive to have her come over to the USA [since the film doesn't seem to have a large budget].

I think Annasophia Robb would be wonderful to play the role of Stargirl! I love this book, and they better not mess it up with the movie, I think that Kevin Jonas should play Leo, that's who he reminds me of, with his voice and face and everything. And ea, Leo Borlock isn't new, he is in Eeventh Grade, Stargirl is new, not Leo, that would totally mess up the whole movie, the whole point is that everything and everyone is already fitting in with everything and everyone else, and they dont want change, Stargirl is the change not Leo!

I loved Stargirl and can't wait for the movie to come out and I agree, Annasophia Robb does have the look although I think Evanna Lynch should play Stargirl. She would just be fantastic.

I agree, I think Evanna Lynch would be just perfect for the role of Stargirl, but they might have to darken her hair just a bit. I really hope they do a good job with the movie and stick to the book, because I hate when they don't. Stargirl inspired me a lot; after reading it, I adopted two rats and learned to play the uke.

well, first of all i beleive this will be a great movie, for i love the book and think it was made to be a movie. For the cast i think that Annasophia Robb would be perfect, Ron Rifkin as Arichie, Johnathan Taylor Thomas as Leo and for Kevin, now this is a tricky one, maybe a new actor, Luke Treadaway, he looks the part and in the movie i saw him in, he was fantastic.

Although, I DO have to disagree with Evanna Lynch as Stargirl. [Even though it probably won't happen...I just want to bring up something.]
An unknown, picked off the street, should play Stargirl. And they really should embody Stargirl's quirks and qualities. [I'm ALL for the directors hosting open auditions for this movie.]
Back to Evanna Lynch - she's a great actress. But her acting the Luna thing for Stargirl does NOT fit. [And most people are referring to her role as Luna, and how her interpretation of Luna would fit for Stargirl.]
Stargirl and Luna are two entirely different people...just because both of them are considered "weird" doesn't mean they're twins in personality.
Luna is very dreamy and quiet. While Stargirl is idealistic, she is outspoken, silly, and quite an extrovert.
Luna sits and watches; Stargirl takes action.
Luna reads; Stargirl sings, plays the ukulele, and dances.
Luna is detached from the world and doesn't mind; Stargirl is detached and she is painfully aware of it.
Luna is expected to be weird because she is the daughter of the Quibbler editor; Stargirl comes from a normal family.
So no, Evanna Lynch, acting like Luna, as Stargirl wouldn't be the best casting choice.
And the actress must not be afraid of rats. Poor Cinnamon. =)
Hopefully you at least see my point...and sorry if this was long.
With that said, I'm super excited about this movie coming out!!!!!! But We'll probably have to wait until 2010. >sigh< I'll just read the book for the ninth time!

I disagree with the people who say "Luna Lovegood" would be good for Stargirl. I didnt like her as Luna anyway she was to normal for luna anna sophia robb will not be good. they should put up a sign or go out to a real high school and get a completely new face. But I still love stargirl is coming out as a movie Im reading it in my class and I love it.

I think that you should not use any famous people and use ametures. Stargirl should be shorter than Leo, look younger than her age, have long sandy blonde hair, and freckels. Leo should not be a jock ( the shy type). Please think about this thanks

I think the cast should be talented yet not famous people. Especially Stargirl. If not the people listed below would probably ruin the movie!

I'm sorry to disagree with some of these comments..
Anna Sophia Rob, lets start with her. Yes, she is a VERY great, actress, and I love her for that. She looks the part as stargirl, but doesn't exactly act the part. Plus, she is also a famous, known, celebrity. Stargirl, (for auditions) should probably be a fresh new face, that you would sometimes see walk down the street from your house, or someone you see at school everyday, but don't talk to her or notice her all that much. Get what I'm sayin'?

As for Leo, if they ever DO choose a person who has been in movies before, it'd be best to choose somebody who wasn't all that noticed in movies, but has some part in them.

Ahh my favorite part, Kevin. I see him as.. crazy, outgoing, and funny. Especially when I read the part with him in Hot Seat. Hahaha that was great. I hope they chose a great, true, guy to play Kevin.

But all in all, this should probably be a great movie, even though the process of it all would be taking a while, considering they don't have a cast for it, yet.

Great book, shuld maybe be a good movie as well. I'm just wondering how they're going to fit all this great stuff from the book, and squeeze it into a 2 hour movie. Means, changing, taking out, switching, replacing, etc.

But, maybe it'll turn out amazing! :) Keep your fingers crossed!
